The team at Orange County Pediatric Dentistry is committed to providing dental care to your child in the most compassionate and comfortable way possible. Many children are nervous about going to the dentist for the first time and may have unique dental problems that could exacerbate their worries. These fears can be easily relieved by using routine strategies, but more advanced techniques are sometimes needed to help the child to relax and trust the dentist.

Part of pediatric dental training includes early childhood development and childhood psychology. The doctors at our office are well-versed in effective behavioral management techniques. Please feel free to discuss any concerns or behavioral problems with our doctors. We encourage open communication between the doctors, the patient and the parent.

  • Preventive and Diagnostic Care

Our most important job as pediatric dentists is to lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Preventive and diagnostic care, along with oral hygiene instruction, are how we accomplish this. As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and it’s always better to prevent cavities than to have to repair the damage they cause!

  • Cosmetic Dentistry

We want our patients to feel confident in their natural smiles, but sometimes certain medications, braces, fluorosis, or injury can lead to stains or chips that cause embarrassment. To correct these minor cosmetic issues, we offer ICON resin infiltration treatment and cosmetic bonding.

  • Restorative Dentistry

When a tooth is damaged by injury or decay, restorative dentistry allows us to restore its strength, function, and health. In addition to dental fillings and crowns, we also offer silver diamine fluoride (SDF), a conservative approach to dental decay that can delay or even eliminate the need for a filling.

  • Interceptive Orthodontics

Interceptive orthodontics aims to prevent orthodontic issues from forming, rather than waiting until problems occur and then correcting them. We offer habit appliances and space maintainers, which can reduce the time your child needs in orthodontic braces when they reach adolescence.

  • Sedation Dentistry for Children

It’s always our goal for patients to be active participants in their dental care, but there are times when that’s just not possible. Some children just need a little help relaxing, while for others, the best option is for them to sleep through their treatment. We offer safe sedation options to make dental care trauma-free.

If you have a child in your care who has special needs, ensuring their dental health can sometimes pose a challenge. A practice that specializes in providing dental care to children with special needs can make an otherwise difficult situation much easier.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pediatric Dentistry

What does a pediatric dentist do?

Children have unique dental needs and pediatric dentists specialize in meeting those needs. We have advanced knowledge and training in primary teeth, emerging adult teeth, interceptive orthodontics, cavity prevention, and oral hygiene instruction.

How long should a child go to a pediatric dentist?

Your child can continue seeing us as long as they are comfortable doing so. Many of our patients stick with us all the way through their teenage years!

When should children start going to the dentist?

Children should start seeing the dentist regularly by their first birthday, or within six months of the eruption of their first tooth. This helps them get familiar with our office and team members, and it’s also important for preventing tooth decay.

Are fillings really needed for baby teeth?

When a primary (or baby) tooth has a cavity, some form of treatment is needed, but a filling may not always be necessary. We offer silver diamine fluoride as an alternative to dental fillings. While SDF does not cure a cavity, it does halt its progress, which may be all that is needed for a primary tooth with a small area of decay.
