Frequently Asked Questions

What happens at your child’s first dental appointment?

The answer to this question is age-dependent. Regardless of age, parents are always welcome in our treatment rooms and younger children may sit on your lap for their initial. The dentist discusses hygiene, diet, and oral health care, tailored to your child’s needs. An exam of the teeth and oral structures surrounding the teeth is often performed as well as a cleaning and fluoride treatment (if indicated). If decay is suspected, dental x-rays may be recommended (typically starting around age 4).

At what age should I take my child for their first dental appointment?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry suggests your child see a dentist by age 1 or within 6 months after the eruption of their first tooth. This visit begins the relationship your child forms with that is referred to as a “dental home”. Like your own home, a dental home is an environment where your child feels comfortable addressing all aspects of oral health.
